Tokyo Governor Koike Suffers Left Knee Injury During Opening Pitch at Jingu Stadium, Will Telework Amid Recovery

On the 7th, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike (72) announced that she suffered a left knee joint avulsion fracture during the ceremonial first pitch at Jingu Stadium on the night of the 6th, and will temporarily perform her official duties via telework from home. She was diagnosed with a recovery period of two months. She is not hospitalized. She is scheduled to attend the Tokyo Memorial Service for the War Dead on the 15th.

Governor Koike performed the ceremonial first pitch at the Yakult-Tigers game at Jingu Stadium, and appeared to stumble to the left during her throw, showing signs of having injured her leg.

Before the first pitch, she promoted the upcoming events, saying, “Next year, the World Athletics Championships will be held at the nearby National Stadium, and the Deaflympics for those with hearing disabilities will also take place at the Tokyo Gymnasium. Let’s continue to boost sports together. Thank you very much.”

Jingu Stadium is aging and will be rebuilt as part of the redevelopment of Jingu Gaien.
