Tokyo: Hashimoto, ‘let’s think behind closed doors’ – Sport

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 30 – The Tokyo 2020 Olympics could take place behind completely closed doors. This was stated by the president of the organizing committee, Seiko Hashimoto, assuring that the Games will be held in complete “safety”. Japan has already decided to prevent access to the foreign public, and has reserved the choice to close also to local fans given the growth of the Coronavirus epidemic. Now, pending a final decision, Hashimoto admits that there could be a “situation in which we could not allow the spectators”, stressing that the Games would be a success only if the organizers “completely” protect the sportsmen and the Japanese population. The final decision is expected in June, but in Japan there are strong controversies due to the fact that with three prefectures in a state of emergency the organizing committee is preparing to ask for the support of the health system for the Olympic car. “The absence of onlookers could ease the pressure on hospitals,” says Hashimoto.
