Tokyo Jimi Halloween Participants Dress as Mundane Daily Frustrations

Adult participants in Tokyo’s Shibuya district gathered on November 1, 2026, for Jimi Halloween, an annual festival where crowds celebrate unremarkable daily routines through everyday costumes rather than traditional spooky attire, offering a subdued alternative to the city’s mainstream Halloween celebrations.

For about 12 years, residents in Japan have found an alternative to the flashy and flamboyant costumes gaining popularity in Tokyo by embracing the most hilariously mundane outfits they can imagine. Known as Jimi Halloween, or Mundane Halloween, the festival draws hundreds of people hosted by online magazine Daily Portal Z in Tokyo’s Shibuya district.

The tradition dates back to 2014, according to Spoon and Tamago, which describes itself as a Japanese art, design and culture website.

The term “Jimi” translates from an online Japanese dictionary as plain, simple, subdued, sober, setting the exact tone for the event. Instead of elaborate gear, participants lean into unremarkable situations that show an awkward or irritating moment in daily life.

Everyday Scenarios Portrayed in Shibuya

The 2026 gathering featured attendees embodying hyper-specific social interactions and minor frustrations. Documented by photographer Tomohiro Ohsumi for The Guardian, participants portrayed characters such as ‘a shop assistant who gives customers a quick spray of deodoriser on their way out’, a traffic marshal directing heavy machinery and buses, and ‘someone who finds the faucet so beautifully designed that they can’t bring themselves to turn on the water.’ Additional roles at the festival included participants taking on the form of work-life balance and AI-generated mapo tofu.

Counteracting Tokyo Halloween Trends

As Halloween has grown increasingly massive in Tokyo with a lot of people going all out on costumes, Jimi Halloween serves as a deliberate party thrown to counteract that trend.

Past years featured social media favorites like a man unaware his backpack was open, a woman whose picture appears on packets of noodles, and a door attendant. One participant even dressed as a person wearing Nike shoes while otherwise outfitted head-to-toe in Adidas.
