A complete journey on the intercity train “El Insurgente,” connecting Zinacantepec in the Toluca Valley to Observatory in Mexico City, will now cost 100 pesos. The final section of the system, linking the Santa Fe station with the Observatorio terminal, is slated to launch this Monday, February 2, effectively uniting the two entities with a 58-kilometer rail line.
A Milestone in Regional Connectivity
The inauguration, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, marks a significant step forward in regional transportation infrastructure. The completed route promises to ease congestion and provide a more efficient travel option for commuters between the State of Mexico and the capital. This expansion builds upon existing sections of the “El Insurgente” line, and officials anticipate a substantial increase in ridership.
Understanding the New Fare Structure
The new fare structure, already displayed in Mexican stations, will officially take effect next Monday. The pricing is designed to be proportional to the distance traveled, offering a range of options for passengers. Here’s a breakdown of the key costs:
- Zinacantepec to Basque of Quiroga or Santa Fe: 90 pesos
- Lerma to Zinacantepec Terminal: 20 pesos (same rate applies from Metepec station)
- Toluca-Centro to Observatory: 90 pesos
- Toluca-Centro to Vasco de Quiroga or Santa Fe: 80 pesos
- Toluca-Centro to Lerma: 20 pesos
- Toluca-Centro to Metepec or Zinacantepec Terminal: 15 pesos

Furthermore, a transfer between adjacent stations is priced at 15 pesos, with the cost increasing with each additional stop.
Integrated Mobility Card Required
Passengers are strongly encouraged to obtain an Integrated Mobility Card to access the service. These cards are available for purchase at ticket offices and automated machines within the stations. Alternatively, single-use QR codes will also be available for those who prefer a one-time access option.
The launch of this final section and the implementation of the new fare system represent a major investment in public transportation for the region, aiming to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents of both Toluca and Mexico City.
