Tom Skerritt, Top Gun and Alien Actor, Dies at 93

Tom Skerritt, the versatile American actor known for his memorable authority figures in Alien and Top Gun, died Wednesday at age 93 of natural causes. His family announced the death, celebrating a Hollywood career that spanned major studio blockbusters, television hits, and independent cinema.

Born in Detroit on August 25, 1933, Skerritt served in the United States Air Force before launching an acting career that stretched from the 1960s through the 2020s. His early television work included appearances in westerns and dramas such as Combat!, Twelve O’Clock High, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Fugitive, and an episode of Death Valley Days portraying a young Mark Twain in 1968, before Robert Altman cast him as the southern military surgeon Duke Forrest in the dark comedy M*A*S*H in 1970. He subsequently appeared in Harold and Maude in 1971. During the 1970s, his agent Meyer Mishkin noted that he had temporarily been relegated to obscure European westerns before landing the role of Wayne, the husband of Shirley MacLaine’s character, in The Turning Point, which earned him a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1977. He also made an appearance as a motorcycle officer in Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude in 1971, using the pseudonym Martin Bormann.

From the Nostromo to Topgun Command

Skerritt solidified his place in cinematic history in 1979 by playing Captain Arthur Dallas aboard the spaceship Nostromo in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror Alien, starring alongside Sigourney Weaver.

It’s spontaneity and instinct that make the difference, and that’s what I felt on Alien. Each of us had immediately forged bonds with the others: I respected the other actors and they respected me. Tom

That collaborative spirit translated to another massive box-office hit when he was cast in Top Gun. As Commander Mike Viper Metcalf, Skerritt played the naval flight instructor who initially refuses to be impressed by Tom Cruise’s rebellious protagonist before taking the young pilot under his wing. The role returned to the big screen when Paramount re-released the film in May 2026 for its 40th anniversary. His expansive filmography across subsequent decades also included features such as Ice Castles in 1978, The Dead Zone in 1983, Poltergeist III in 1988, Robert Redford’s 1992 drama A River Runs Through It alongside Brad Pitt, Robert Zemeckis’s sci-fi film Contact in 1997, Antoine Fuqua’s Tears of the Sun in 2003 as a Navy captain issuing orders to Bruce Willis, and Ted in 2012.

Emmy Win for Picket Fences Leads to Diverse Television Roles

From 1992 to 1996, he starred as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the eccentric Wisconsin-set CBS drama series Picket Fences (broadcast in France as High Secret City, la ville du grand secret). The performance won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.

His television footprint extended across multiple decades with recurring roles in Brothers & Sisters from 2006 to 2009 as family patriarch William Walker, alongside appearances in The West Wing as a senator, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as a biased judge, and guest spots on À la Maison Blanche. His final television appearance arrived in 2015 on Madam Secretary, while his last film role released in 2021.
