Thiruvananthapuram: Coxsackie virus variants have been found to be the cause of tomato fever spreading among children in the state. The confirmation was in the sample analysis conducted at the Institute of Advanced Virology, Thiruvananthapuram.

Coxsackie belongs to the group of enteroviruses. Director of the Institute said that A-6 and A-16 variants are spreading in the state. E. Sreekumar said. Genetic sequencing of samples from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts was done at the institute.

In most districts, tomato fever is reported in children and rarely in adults. Tomato fever is a relatively mild disease.

Symptoms

  • A little fever
  • Blisters inside the mouth, on the tongue, inside the cheeks, and on the gums
  • Sore throat and difficulty swallowing.
  • Red bumps and blisters on hands, feet and buttocks
  • It starts as a discolored spot and blisters like chickenpox. Within a week, these blisters will start to dry up.
  • The virus is mainly transmitted through contact with an infected person and through nasal and throat secretions. It is a highly contagious disease. Rarely, it can progress to life-threatening complications such as pulmonary edema.
