Two months ago, the price of a kilo of tomatoes was Rs. 7, but today it is Rs. 100 per kilo. The price of tomatoes, which are essential for food preparation, has left many speechless.
“Every day 60 lorries used to bring 7 to 8 tonnes of tomatoes to the Coimbatore market. But currently there are less than 40 lorries of tomatoes. While the daily requirement of tomatoes is 400 tons, only 250 tons are available. Two months ago the price of tomatoes plummeted and many small farmers could not make enough profit to plant the next crop.
Therefore, it will take up to two months for the tomatoes to be harvested again, so the price of tomatoes is not likely to go down till the end of July, ”said Chandran, president of the Farmers’ Union.
