Coimbatore: Housewives are worried as tomato prices continue to peak.

The Coimbatore market has a large supply of tomatoes from Ottansathram, Theni, Dindigul, Hosur and other states in Tamil Nadu, including Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. At present, only tomatoes are available from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. As a result, the supply of tomatoes to the market has been declining. While the daily demand for tomatoes in Chennai was 12 lakh kg, 4.5 lakh kg of tomatoes arrived in 37 lorries yesterday.

Following this, in the wholesale market, 1 kg of native tomatoes sold for 90-95 rupees. At retail, it sells for Rs 110-120. Similarly, beans are imported from Ooty and Karnataka. In Coimbatore, the demand for 3 lakh kg of beans came to 60,000 kg yesterday. Thus, 1 kg of beans sold for 110 rupees.

In this situation, the federal government has reduced the tax on petrol and diesel, which has reduced its price. Thus, in two more days, all vegetables will be reduced by Rs 10-15 per kg, traders said.
