The popular Argentine comedy and musical group The Luthiers present tomorrow Sunday at Porta Ferrada festival of Sant Feliu de Guíxols his show More setbacks by Mastropiero, in which it will be his last performance on European stages. After Sant Feliu, the assembly can be seen at Bolivia, Argentina i Chile and then Les Luthiers will end their career, which started in 1967. “It was a difficult decision”, he admits Jorge Marona, the only founding member of Les Luthiers who remains active. In an interview given to Girona newspaper (which is published tomorrow in the Sunday supplement), Maronna explains that he and the other most veteran member of the formation, Carlos Lopez Puccio (luthier since 1969) «we became aware that nothing is eternalnot even Les Luthiers, and that our age was starting to be an important reason to think about a farewell».

This reflection was made at the end of last year, when Les Luthiers was already wearing 55 years of experienceand when it was just released More setbacks by Mastropiero, the group’s first new show in fourteen years, and the first that Maronna and López Puccio composed alone (the previous productions had been collective creations of all its members): “We have always felt enormous pressure when writing a show , but in this case it was even bigger, due to the long time that had passed since our last premiere, and because it was the first one we did with Carlos, the two of us; even though we’ve been collaborating as a creative team for many years, it wasn’t the same as writing it between the five of us, which was the usual,” says Maronna.

The announcement of the withdrawal came shortly after Les Luthiers had performed at the Girona Auditorium, in October last year, with the show Les Luthiers Gran Reserva, an anthology of some of his most outstanding issues. Only a month later, they premiered in Argentina More setbacks by Mastropiero (which actually should have seen the light earlier, but which was delayed because of the pandemic), and at the beginning of 2023 they announced the start of their farewell tour, precisely with this new show that arrives tomorrow at ten at night in Sant Feliu after having performed for four days in Barcelona and in other Spanish cities in recent weeks.

It’s Les Luthiers’ first new show in fourteen years and combines music and text, always with humor

The great protagonist of More setbacks by Mastropiero it is precisely Johann Sebastian Mastropiero, the fictitious composer “author” of the vast majority of musical pieces that Les Luthiers has played throughout its history. On this occasion, Mastropiero is present in person on stage and is interviewed in a cultural program, which also reviews his musical career with the interpretation of different pieces: all are new creations by Jorge Maronna and Carlos López Puccio except for two recovered of the best moments in the history of Les Luthiers, Aria Agraria and Pasión Bucólica, with the collective authorship of all the members of the group at that time: in addition to Maronna and López Puccio, Marcos Mundstock, Carlos Núñez Cortés and Daniel Rabinovich. Gerardo Masana, considered to be the founder of the group in 1967, was missing at that time.

As usual in Les Luthiers shows, the humor in the form ofjokes i word games i absurd situationsand the mix of classical and popular music with humorous lyrics, are constant a more setbacks…, where nods are introduced to current affairs, from politics to inclusive language. There are also some of the peculiar instruments that have also characterized Les Luthiers, such as a peculiar one keyboard made with plastic ballsand piston organ o one bidet converted into an ancient medieval stringed instrument.
