The film by the Oscar-winning Neapolitan director based on Arthur Schnitzler. The screenplay will feature two characters over the age of fifty: the famous Venetian libertine and an important filmmaker during the shooting

of Ignazio Senatore

Sar Toni Servillo the protagonist of the film The return of Casanova directed by Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores. The story is written by Arthur Schnitzler in 1918, already adapted for television by Pasquale Festa Campanile in 1978, interpreted by Giulio Bosetti and Grazia Maria Spina, and then translated to the big screen in 1992 under the direction of Edouard Niermans with Alain Delon, Fabrice Luchini and Philippe Leroy.

A fascinating text by the Viennese writer who tells of the fifty-three-year-old Casanova who, after a few years, is returning to Venice, after escaping from the Piombi prison. He meets Marcolina, a twenty-year-old girlfriend to second lieutenant Lorenzi, falls in love with her and decides to seduce her. With a ruse, he manages to spend a night of love with her, but at dawn the second lieutenant shows up and challenges him to a duel. Casanova kills him and then flees to Venice.

Shooting of the film will begin in September and the screenplay, written by the director himself with Umberto Contarello and Sara Mosetti, will develop two parallel narratives; on the one hand it follows the events of the Venetian libertine and on the other, as Salvatores himself announced, it involves an important Italian director over sixty who during the filming of Casanova’s Return falls in love and gets pregnant a very young woman who has nothing to do with the world of cinema, with today’s part shot in black and white and the historical part in color.

The film narrates the loneliness and the inevitable advance of old age of a man who has made conquests his pride and reason for living and which marks the first collaboration between the visionary Neapolitan director and Toni Servillo, one of the most celebrated actors of the criticized and acclaimed by the public. A confirmation, moreover, of Schnitzler’s still intact fascination that he also exchanges a close correspondence with Sigmund Freud who, due to his remarkable ability to explore the human mind, came to define him as his double. A writer, among other things, always much loved by directors and producers. In fact, many of his works translated to the big screen. In 1932 Max Ophuls made his masterpiece La ronde, (1932), starring Simone Signoret and Gerard Philipe, (which boasts two remakes; the first The pleasure and love of Roger Vadim (1964) with Catherine Spaak and Jean Sorel and Jane Fonda and Fernando Mereilles’ second Passions and Desires (2011) with Anthony Hopkins and Jude Law). This was followed by Pure Lover, (1958) directed by Pierre Gaspard Huilt with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider, Otto Schenk’s Il girotondo dell’amore (1973) with Maria Schneider and Helmut Berger, My dear Doctor Grasler (1992) by Roberto Faenza with Keith Carradine and Max Von Sydow and, finally, the very famous Eyes wide shut (1999) by Stanley Kubrick with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

To produce the film by Salvatores la Indiana by Marco Cohen, Fabrizio Donvito, Benedetto Habib and Daniel Campos Pavoncelli with Rai Cinema.
