Books – Youssef Afifi:

The Astronomical Society in Jeddah said that the sky of the Arab world witnesses, after sunset today, Sunday, and the beginning of the night, the star “Suhail”, the second brightest star in the night sky, and one of the famous stars among the Arabs.

The association added, in a post on its official Facebook page, that the star is easily observed with the naked eye and will be high above the southern horizon at nine o’clock in the evening local time, below the star Sirius.

She explained that the star of Suhail, a giant white color, was relied upon in the Middle Ages to determine the direction of the qiblah. Astronomers estimate this star to be 27 million years old, as it is classified among the stars with a short life, under the limit of its explosion and its transformation into a black hole.

And the Astronomical Society in Jeddah continued: “The Suhail star is 313 light-years away from Earth, and it is the brightest star among the group of stars “Carina”, the southern base, and the second brightest star at night after Sirius, and if its distance from us was like Sirius, it would surpass it in brightness.
