(ANSA) – ROME, 02 AUG – Not just a medical plethora: with the accesses to Dentistry planned for the academic year 2024/2025, the concrete risk is that of a dental plethora. With easily predictable consequences: unemployment, underemployment. And flight abroad of new professionals, with the associated waste of public resources used to train them.
The alarm was raised today by the President of the National Dental Register Commission (CAO), Raffaele Iandolo.
“In the face of a need for new Dentists in six years that is equal to zero – explains Iandolo – the enrolments expected this year for the degree course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics are 1,535, of which 116 are reserved for candidates from non-EU countries residing abroad, 149 more than last year. Not only that: new Degree Courses have also been created at Universities that until now had none. In six years, the new graduates will be joined by professionals who decide to train abroad, especially in countries where the entrance tests are less “stringent”, and then practice in Italy, who are over 500 a year. In Italy today there are already around 65 thousand Dentists, with a ratio of one for every 900 inhabitants that places us well above the European average and which is double that indicated by the World Health Organization, according to which the optimal ratio should be one professional for every 900 inhabitants. 2 thousand people. In the absence of proper planning, we will find ourselves, in a few years, facing a significant plethora”. (ANSA).
