Stagnating birth rates are forcing fresh thinking about migration, says the World Bank. Germany should also think about it.

Dhe demographic change is triggering intense competition for immigrants. This is what the World Bank predicts in its latest development report. Irrespective of political preferences, rich countries needed foreign workers to keep their economies stable and to guarantee the promised benefits for the elderly.

The same challenge also exists in many emerging countries, many of which will be dependent on immigration due to low birth rates, according to the World Bank. The countries that are still growing thanks to high birth rates are mostly in Africa and are poor. On average, women in sub-Saharan Africa have more than four children. Young people in particular are underemployed in these countries, but they often do not have the necessary skills for the global labor market.
