We all have that one friend who feels like he never washes his face, doesn’t use any care products, regularly goes to bed with make-up on – and yet is never bothered by pimples, blackheads or underlays. How unfair the world is! But although genes play a major role in skin condition, we don’t have to simply accept impure skin. With the right routine and a little patience, most problems can be dealt with relatively easily. We’ll show you valuable tips against impure skin.

What to do if you have impure skin?

1 | CHECK HORMONE STATUS
An excess of male hormones (androgens) is often responsible for acne, which is why a hormone status check by your family doctor can make sense – especially if there are other symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles or excessive hair growth.

2 | GET ENOUGH SLEEP
When you sleep, the body repairs, among other things, skin damage, which is why a restful night’s sleep is the be-all and end-all for healthy skin. Lack of sleep also promotes inflammatory reactions in the body – and that includes pimples.

3 | AVOID DAIRY PRODUCTS
The whey proteins contained in cow’s milk increase insulin levels and, as a result, the release of male hormones, which can promote impurities. Products made from soy, oat or almond milk, for example, are a good alternative. Also be careful with whey-based protein shakes!

4 | RELY ON THE RIGHT ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Oily skin with impurities benefits from benzyol peroxide (BPO for short), which has an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and horn-dissolving effect. Beta hydroxy acids (BHA) such as salicylic acid help with mild acne – it exfoliates the skin, inhibits sebum production and cleanses the pores. Vitamin A (retinol), vitamin C, niacinamide, zinc and clay are also good choices.

5 | CLEAN TWICE DAILY
Cleansing your face in the evening is a must anyway. If you have impure (and especially very oily) skin, it can also help to cleanse your skin with a mild product in the morning – sebum and dirt also collect on the surface of the skin overnight.

6 | CHANGE PILLOWCASES & TOWELS FREQUENTLY
Change your pillowcases at least two to three times a week – after all, sweat, oil and make-up residue as well as dirt particles from your hair end up on the pillow every night. The same applies to the facial cleansing towel, which should ideally be changed daily.

7 | FINGER AWAY FROM YOUR FACE
Even if it’s difficult: try to touch your face with your fingers as rarely as possible. There are all sorts of viruses and bacteria on our hands that not only transmit diseases, but can also cause or intensify local inflammation.

8 | TALKING ON THE TELEPHONE WITH HEADPHONES
When it comes to hygiene, things look rather bad on our cell phone screens. Because of the constant contact with our fingers, the average smartphone is reportedly even more contaminated with bacteria than a toilet seat.
So: Instead of holding the display to your cheek the next time you call, use headphones or speakers (please not on the bus).

9 | CLEAN BRUSHES & CO
If you can’t remember the last time, it’s high time: powder brushes should be cleaned with a mild shampoo about twice a week, beauty blenders after each use. Sponges can also be boiled every now and then to kill any bacteria.

10 | AVOID ALCOHOL
If the health benefits aren’t convincing, then perhaps the cosmetic ones: alcohol removes moisture from the skin, stimulates sebum production and promotes pimples and irritation. And we don’t love that at all! If you have taken part in Dry January, you may have noticed it yourself: without regular
When you consume alcohol, your skin immediately becomes plumper, clearer and fresher.
