Top 10 Youth Words for 2024 Revealed: Will ‘Pascal’ Make the Cut?

by time news

The top 10 suggestions for the Youth Word of the Year 2024 have been announced. Find out why “Pascal” gets involved and why he receives a “no” here.

Last year, they crowned “goofy” as the winning word for a clumsy person. The Langenscheidt publishing house has released the top 10 for the Youth Word of the Year 2024. Here are the favorites this year:

Included is the evergreen: “Yolo” – “You only live once” was already the Youth Word of the Year in 2012. But there are also a few new candidates on the list:

Where does the meme “No Pascal, I don’t think so” come from?

The phrase is a creative way to say “no.” The saying likely comes from a scripted reality show that deals with the problems of young people. The statement is made when actor Pascal asks his girlfriend for sex in a rather uncharming manner. She responds, “No Pascal, I don’t think so.” It has since become a meme on social media.

These youth words are also up for selection:

  • Akh” comes from Arabic and is used as a term of address for a friend or acquaintance.
  • Talahon” means “come here” and stands, according to the publisher, for people with stereotypical behavior. However, the word can also be problematic.
  • Yurr” is an American slang term used to indicate agreement or greeting.
  • Hölle nein,” a translation of “hell no,” which expresses a contradiction
  • Aura” is used jokingly when someone, for example, loses their coolness.
  • Digga(h)” describes a buddy.
  • Pyrotechnik” comes from the football environment.
  • Schere” is found in online gaming and is a confession that one has done something.

Voting is over: The Boomer Word of the Year has been decided!

Every year, the Youth Word of the Year is chosen – but young people usually don’t even know it. Enough of the Firlefanz! Now the young ones have chosen the “Boomer Word” of the year.

The Youth Word will be decided in October

You can vote until September 3 for which words should make it into the top 3. Among the finalists, you can vote again until October 8 at the Langenscheidt publishing house. The winning word will finally be announced live at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 19.

Youth Word without Susanne Daubner? Indeed!

News anchor Susanne Daubner is not going to miss the chance to read the candidates again – even though she originally wanted to stop. In a video on Instagram, Daubner explains that she likely won’t be part of the selection for the Youth Word 2024.

This year, however, I will unfortunately not participate anymore; I would like to give others a turn now. If you have suggestions, let us know.

Then, as if casually, she reads the ten favorites and humorously wonders why “Yolo” is still included but “daubnern” is missing.

How about “daubnern” as a new youth word?

After the hype around Daubner’s presentations of the youth words in recent years, she deserves something special: “daubnern” today – what could that mean? Write it in the comments!
