Tom Cruise soon to return in one of his most iconic roles. According to several American media, a third part of the cult saga “Top Gun” is currently in preparation. THE Hollywood Reporter suggests that Ehren Kruger, the co-writer of the last “Top Gun: Maverick”, is already working on writing the next film.
If no information on the synopsis and the date has been revealed, the ambition of the co-writer would be to bring together on screen Tom Cruise and the duo of young actors from the second part, Miles Teller and Glen Powell. If we had to wait 36 years between the release of the first and second film, we can already say that the time between the release of the second and third episodes of the saga will not be as long.
On the other hand, it is difficult to imagine this new episode of the saga arriving quickly on the big screen. Indeed, Tom Cruise has just signed an important, but non-exclusive, partnership with Warner Bros. for future collaboration on original film and sagas projects, according to Variety. A collaboration which also revives the hope that an Edge of Tommorrow 2 will see the light of day.
Tom Cruise’s greatest success
Released in 1986, “Top Gun” was a great success and became the film that helped propel Tom Cruise to the forefront of the international scene. It tells the story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a rebellious but talented fighter pilot who becomes a legend at a US Navy air combat school, Top Gun.
Thirty-six years after the release of the first film, fans were treated to a sequel in 2022, with “Top Gun: Maverick”. This new opus gave Tom Cruise his biggest success in cinemas, with revenues estimated at 1.5 billion dollars worldwide.
While waiting to have more information on this third part which will see Tom Cruise return to the cockpits, the 61-year-old star actor is currently busy filming the eighth film in the “Mission Impossible” franchise, which is scheduled for release in May 2025.
