Free agents have gone like hotcakes this year in the National Hockey League (NHL), but there are still some very interesting options on the market.
For many observers, Daniel Sprong deserves the most attention, at least on offense. The 27-year-old right winger did not sign a contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings and is free as air.

The Amsterdam, Netherlands native showed a good haul of 18 goals and 43 points last season. It’s not as good as his 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games in the 2022-2023 campaign, which he played with the Seattle Kraken, but he has proven that he can produce regularly.
Above all, Sprong could be lured with a very reasonable salary. He earned $2 million with the Wings, for a very fair point value of $46,500. For example, with the Montreal Canadiens, Josh Anderson cost $275,000 per point in 2023-2024.
Sprong has also attracted the attention of the Vancouver Canucks, according to journalist Rick Dhaliwal. The team’s current president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford, drafted the forward in 2015 when he was general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The British Columbia club is a bit tight on payroll and would have to make some personnel moves if they want to attract the QMJHL alum, but he could be brought in to play on the team’s top two lines.
Among the other unrestricted free agents available, the names of Tyler Johnson, Max Pacioretty, Jakub Vrana, Tyson Barrie, Oliver Kylington and John Klingberg could attract several NHL teams.
