On the occasion of the 2023 Pan American Games, which will be held in Chile between October 20 and November 5, the names and, after the colon, the recommended demonyms of all participating American countries and territories are recalled below.

Belice (Better with c, no Belize): Belizean, -ña.

Bermuda (plural and capitalized): Bermudian

• Bolivia: boliviano, -na.

• Brazil (he): Brazilian, -na o brazilian, -ra (no Brazilian).

• Canada (he): Canadian.

• Chile: Chilean, – already.

• Colombia: Colombian, – already.

• Costa Rica: Costa Rican (with double r).

• Cuba: Cuban, – already.

• Dominica: dominiques (Do not confuse with Dominican).

• Ecuador (he): Ecuadorian, – already.

• The Savior: Salvadoran, -na.

• United States of America (los) (abbreviated EE. UU. o USAno USA): US (better than americano).

• Granada (no Grenada): Grenadian, – already.

• Guyana: Guyanese, -esa.

Haiti (with an accent in the i): Haitian, – already.

• Honduras: honduran, -ña.

• Cayman Islands (las) (no Cayman): Caymanian, -esa.

• British Virgin Islands (las): british virginian, -ca o of the British Virgin Islands.

• United States Virgin Islands (las): American Virgin o of the United States Virgin Islands.

• Mexico (con x, better than Mexico): Mexican, – already.

• Nicaragua: Nicaraguan (with umlaut).

• Panama (with an accent, no Panama): Panamanian, -ña.

• Paraguay (he): Paraguayan, -of.

• Peru (he): Peruvian, – already.

• Puerto Rico: Puerto Rican, -ña (with a double r, better than Puerto Rican o portorricense).

• Dominican Republic (the): Dominican, -na (Do not confuse with dominiques).

Saint Kitts and Nevis (no Saint Kitts y Nevis o Saint Kitts and Nevis): San Cristobaleño, -ña.

• St. Vincent and the Grenadines (no Saint Vincent and the Grenadines): sanvicentino, -na.

• St. Lucia (no Saint Lucia): Santa Lucien.

• Surinam (antigua Dutch Guiana, no Suriname): surinamese, -In.

Trinidad and Tobago (con y, better than Trinidad and Tobago o Trinidad and Tobago): trinitense.

• Uruguay (he): Uruguayan, -of.

• Venezuela: Venezuelan, – already.

The athletes of Guatemala (whose name is Guatemalan, -ca) compete in this edition as neutral athletes with the flag of the organizing entity, the Pan American Sports Organization, also known by the commercial name of Panam Sports.

The place names and demonyms recommended in this list are, for the most part, those that appear in the “List of countries and capitals, with their demonyms” of the Spelling of the Spanish language.

As indicated in the list, some place names are traditionally preceded by the articles he, the, las… (Peru, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic). In these cases, the article is written in lower case, since it is not part of the proper name.
