Tonight, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid breaks the official “neutrality” that Israel has maintained so far regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and clarifies: We are on the side of the West.

“Because if a war breaks out between Russia and Ukraine then Israel will naturally side with its traditional ally the United States, despite the interest in maintaining good relations with the Russians. “If there is an invasion, the Americans will be elected,” Foreign Minister Lapid told Shesh Am Oded Ben-Ami on News 12.

Despite this, Lapid stressed: “We are more careful than the Americans and they understand that.” According to Lapid, Israel has two problems that the United States and Britain do not have – “a border with Russia and a border with Syria,” as well as the fear for the safety of hundreds of thousands of Jews in Russia and Ukraine.

“Our situation is a bit like the situation of the Baltic states,” Lapid said. “We have a border with Russia and a border with Syria for all intents and purposes.” He added that the security coordination with them is “what allows us, according to foreign reports, constant Israeli activity against the Iranians in Syria.” At the same time, he emphasized the Israeli government’s concern for the peace of the Jewish communities in Russia and Ukraine – and the importance of this consideration in Israeli decision-making.
