Opening with «Linda and the chicken», an animated film with a very simple story, but with a surprising design
It was the women’s turn to open the competition of the 41st Torino Film Festival and the choice could not have been better. «Linda veut du poulet» (Linda and the chicken) is an animated film directed by Chiara Malta with Sébastiern Laudenbach: the story is very simple (little Linda wants to eat a chicken with peppers at all costs because it reminds her of her dead father ) but a surprising drawing, made up of characters outlined only enough to understand their movements and as if framed within spots of delicate colours, is the ideal key to explode a screenplay that goes from realism (you have to find a chicken) to a fairy tale then to the dream and much more, as in a kind of firework where stubborn policemen, quarrelsome sisters, mischievous children and romantic truck drivers fill the eyes and the heart.
All feminine, however, is “Soleils Atikamekw” (The Suns of the Atikamakw) by Chloé Leriche, a kind of essay-film suspended between the dreamlike and the melancholic that reconstructs the case of five members of the Atikamekw people in the Manawan reserve in Quebec. In 1977, a van with five dead and half-naked natives was found in a river a couple of meters deep in water: the local police classified everything as an accident, perhaps due to excessive drinking, and did not investigate further. The director collected the pain and memories of her relatives and with the help of community members she reconstructed the efforts made to obtain justice (which arrived too late, in 2016, and without anyone paying the price). Alternating off-screen voices with fictional scenes, moments of desperation with the stubbornness of those who want to investigate, she has constructed a kind of emotional “funeral mass”, where resignation and anger are tangled in a film that manages to make us touch the pain, the injustice and racism. Like in Scorsese’s recent film.
