Tornado killed at least 70 people in Kentucky

Dozens of people have died after bad weather ravaged several US states, destroying a candle factory in Kentucky, an Amazon facility in Illinois, and a nursing home in Arkansas. US President Joe Biden is informed of the incident.

“We believe that the death toll from this event will exceed 50 Kentucky residents and will likely be between 70 and 100,” Kentucky Governor Andy Besheer said at a press conference (quoted by AP). “It’s very hard, really hard, and we pray for each of these families,” the governor said. Mr. Besheer said about 110 people were at the Mayfield factory when the tornado hit.

Kentucky State Police spokeswoman Sarah Burgess said search and rescue teams are still clearing the rubble, but do not yet know how many people have died. “We just cannot confirm the number right now because we are still working and we have so many departments helping us,” said Ms Burgess. She said rescue teams are using heavy equipment to move rubble at a candle factory in western Kentucky. Coroners were called to the scene, but how many people died there is still unknown. It takes time to remove all the rubble.

President Joe Biden said he was briefed on the situation and promised that the affected states “will get what they need as they continue to search for survivors and assess the damage.”
