Toronto Murder: Man Charged in Death of Yuk Kwan Chu Near Highway 401

A 60-year-old man is now facing a first-degree murder charge after the body of a missing Toronto woman was discovered near Highway 401 in Pickering, Ontario. The case, which began as a missing person investigation, has rapidly evolved following the identification of the victim and the escalation of charges against a suspect.

Disappearance and Initial Investigation

Yuk Kwan Chu, 67, was reported missing on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in the area of Brimley Road and Omni Drive. Investigators quickly determined the circumstances surrounding her disappearance were suspicious, prompting an immediate investigation. According to police, the initial assessment was based on the specific details of the case, though further elaboration was not provided.

A man, identified as Zhi Kuang, 60, was arrested the same day and initially charged with aggravated assault.

Body Found, Charges Upgraded

On Friday, July 11, 2025, officers located Chu’s body near Highway 401 and Whites Road shortly after midnight. Following the discovery, Toronto police announced on Saturday, July 12, 2025, that Kuang’s charge had been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Police have confirmed that Kuang was in a common-law relationship with the victim. The motive behind the alleged crime remains under investigation.

The cause of Chu’s death has not yet been publicly released. Her death marks the city’s 20th homicide of the year.
