Heavy rains in recent days led to flooding in Britain, which prevented events planned for the weekend when Catholics celebrate Easter, DPA reported.

According to the Met Office, more rain is expected over the bank holiday weekend, with travel disruption expected in England and Wales on Monday due to expected heavy rain. This morning, the UK’s Environment Agency issued 17 warnings of expected flooding in parts of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. 132 flood warnings have also been issued in southern England.

Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s ground was completely covered in water today and horse racing at Musselburgh Racecourse outside Edinburgh was canceled due to the waterlogged pitch.

Craig Snell, a meteorologist at the service, warned that England and Wales as a whole was most likely to see sunny weather today, but it would start to deteriorate from tomorrow afternoon. Clouds from the North Sea will blanket England and Wales on Easter Sunday, bringing gray weather and showers in places. Then, in the early hours of Monday, heavy rain will pass through England and Wales, which will continue throughout the day, writes BTA.

There will be brighter spells in Scotland and Northern Ireland on both days.

Those traveling on Monday should allow extra time due to poor conditions, forecasters advise.

The main race at Musselburgh, home to the £100,000 ($126,250) Virgin Bet Queen’s Cup, was canceled due to the flooded track. Track general manager Bill Farnsworth said on social media that due to the rain, wet winter and groundwater levels, “the ground is waterlogged in places.”

Family events, including the annual Corgi Derby featuring racing dogs, were due to take place on race day, but that too was cancelled.
