MADRID, 22 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sandra Torres, the candidate for the National Unity of Hope (UNE) for the Guatemalan presidential elections, still does not recognize the victory of her rival, Bernardo Arévalo, of the Seed Movement, more than 24 hours after learning the results of the elections held this weekend.

Torres has not spoken since the elections were held, when Arévalo obtained an overwhelming majority, receiving 58 percent of the votes compared to 37 percent for the UNE candidate, who canceled the press conference after election day .

After what has been his third defeat, Torres has also limited who can read his posts on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter.

The only reaction from his political formation took place on Sunday night, when the UNE executive committee declared itself “in permanent session” after the vote count, stating that they will establish “a definitive position when the results are clarified with total transparency”. .

In this context, Arévalo, when asked about this silence on the US television channel CNN, stressed that “the people of Guatemala spoke very clearly”, not “only with the numbers” but with “the popular expression of joy” in streets.

“This is the feeling of a people that finds a way out of a situation, and that celebrates with the flags of Guatemala in the street, not with the flags of a party, nor with the slogans of a people,” he said.

These elections have acquired much greater relevance after Arévalo broke with all the forecasts -in some polls he was ranked eighth among the electorate’s preferences- by managing to advance to the second round. His message against corruption, democratic regression and the political class that has managed the country for decades ended up permeating a very discontent society.
