Torsten Lieberknecht had to pause a couple of times during his statement, visibly struggling with his emotions as he tried to collect his feelings, not wanting a tear to roll down from his moist eyes. In an emotional video, the resigned football coach said goodbye to the fans of SV Darmstadt 98 on Tuesday.

“I want to thank you for an incredible time that we have experienced together, with highs, the promotion to the first league, but also lows in the past months.” He, Lieberknecht, always felt the attachment of the fans. On Sunday, following the 0:4 loss at SV Elversberg, the coach offered his resignation to the club, which accepted it.

Lieberknecht wanted to set “the greatest possible impulse”

“If the standard were your fan culture, the Bölle, the employees, the city of Darmstadt, and the people in Darmstadt, my time here would be eternal,” said Lieberknecht, but in this damned football business, often the aforementioned laws apply. They are: “Points, wins, and losses.”

There have simply been far too many losses in the past twelve months. “That’s why I decided to set the greatest possible impulse and make way for a new coach. To give you and the team back the success that you deserve.”

Torsten Lieberknecht is celebrated by his players after the promotion.

Very personal words

Lieberknecht concluded his three-and-a-half-minute statement with very personal words to the fans: “Remember me as a person, as a coach who has lived the Lilies from day one with full identification and with all my heart. Keep me in your hearts as someone who perceived the club as something very special, which is truly different due to tradition.”

Although the Lilies are no longer his sporting home, “Darmstadt has become our home as a family. Goodbye, your Torsten.” Lieberknecht’s voice broke, he stood up – and tears finally streamed down his face.
