Toshiba has begun developing hard drives with a record capacity of over 30 TB. This is stated in the company’s blog, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.

The creation of hard drives of such large capacity was made possible by the introduction of two recording technologies: HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording), magnetic recording with thermal support, and MAMR (Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording), magnetic recording using microwaves.

HAMR uses near light to heat the disks, which allows for a smaller writing head and lower magnetic energy consumption. This innovative solution has made it possible to create a hard drive with a capacity of 32 TB.

MAMR technology uses a microwave transmitter to generate waves in the range of 20 to 40 GHz. This also helps to reduce the size of the writing head and reduce power consumption, which made it possible to create a hard drive with a capacity of 31 TB.

Toshiba plans to begin shipping test samples of hard drives based on HAMR technology in 2025. The company is currently actively working on creating HDDs with a capacity of 40 TB, but the approximate cost of such hard drives has not yet been disclosed.
