The downhill skiers in the Alpine Ski World Cup return from North America to Europe without having achieved anything. After the total failure at the Matterhorn, all three races in Beaver Creek were also canceled due to the weather. After the two downhill runs, the Super-G on the “Birds of Prey” could not take place on Sunday. Like the day before, there was too much wind in the ski resort in the US state of Colorado.
Of the six planned men's races, only the slalom in Gurgl took place as planned. The speed specialists are trying the next opening with three races starting the Thursday after next in Val Gardena. In South Tyrol, one of the canceled Matterhorn descents will also be added. The chances that the other four competitions can be accommodated in the tightly packed World Cup calendar are not that great. Additional races in Wengen and/or Kvitfjell are being discussed. The technicians will be back next weekend. They compete in a giant slalom and slalom in Val d'Isere.
ÖSV Alpine Director Herbert Mandl expected a complicated return journey in view of the onset of winter in Europe. “The withdrawal will certainly be turbulent so that everyone really gets back to Europe on time.” The first of two planned US trips – technology races are planned in Palisades Tahoe and Aspen at the end of February and March – was not in vain, emphasized Mandl. The speed training, which has so far been neglected in Europe due to the snow conditions, was very good.
After the triple victory of the Austrian slalom athletes, the downhill skiers would also have liked to show what they can do. “It was a brilliant start in Gurgl, which brought a lot of positive emotions to the whole team. We'll take that with us for the next races,” said Mandl.
