For Toni Kroos, this means the end of an era: the last game of the European Championship is also the last of his career. His wife Jessica Kroos accompanied this with emotional words.
“One title was still missing. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be,” wrote Jessica Kroos in an Instagram post that showed several photos of his children in Kroos jerseys. “Today we are all just incredibly sad, but from tomorrow onwards we will be cheering and we are just proud of you all,” she added. “You are our hero and I thank you for taking me on this journey and allowing me to be your wife. We are incredibly excited that you will finally be with us more, but we will also miss you on the pitch,” Jessica Kroos wrote to her husband and found encouraging words: “Unfortunately, you cannot see the pride in your children’s eyes in the stands when you are on the pitch, but you can imagine that they are almost bursting with pride and I am too.”
In another post by Jessica Kroos it says: “We discussed almost every day for many months when the right time would be to stop. To stop doing what is the focus of our lives – football,” wrote the mother of three children, adding: “There is no right time for it. Only everyone can find and choose the right time for themselves. And you have. Just like you almost always make the right decisions in football.”
When Toni Kroos expressed the idea of returning to the national team before the European Championships at home, his wife said she could not imagine how and why that would work. “I didn’t want you to leave the field as a loser in your last game of your career and be at fault again,” said Jessica Kroos.
“And yes, you left the field as losers today, but you fought until the end. You showed Germany that you are a team, that you fight for each other and you brought enthusiasm back to a country,” she cheered. “And above all, you finally got the recognition in Germany that was long overdue.”
