DISPATCH — In Toulouse, videos of “fight clubs” between college students are circulating and causing a stir. If the young people do not risk much from a legal point of view, and assure that it is “for fun”, the adults begin to worry about it.

It is around the college of Pierre-de-Fermat, yet famous and in the city center, that most combats occur. The teenagers organize themselves on WhatsApp and find themselves in gangs where they can: street corner, laundromat… “Sometimes the police are forced to intervene, because it’s quite violent”, says a student, before d add that “the phenomenon increased from the 6th to the 3rd”. Everyone was watching so it made some people fight for the center of attention.”

If they can hurt themselves severely, criminally speaking, young people risk almost nothing. The police can intervene, but “there would have to be a more serious event for there to be real consequences”. On the side of the parents of students, the FCPE plans to act, but gently. Géraldine Artigues, president of the local Fermat parents’ council, explains: “The students see this as a game. Above all, we want them to realize that it’s not a game, but a fight, violence. The sanction will come when the information is passed on and the children understand the seriousness of these acts. Pedagogy above all.”

Finally, the rectorate of Toulouse tries to mark the occasion by summoning the offending students. They should be punished, but no one knows how.
