We had left him at the foot of the Bastille climb in Grenoble after a completely failed Critérium du Dauphiné where he had lost his footing over the stages. This time, smiles were out for David Gaudu. Tenth in the stage but above all in the right car of the strongest, the little Breton was reassured. He believed that his missed Dauphiné was due to poor acclimatization to the altitude during his preparation course in Calpe in Spain and that everything was going to be back to normal before the Tour. His first step seems to prove him right.

How do you rate your first day?

David Gaudu. It was a race of attrition. The strongest found themselves in front. In the end, the goal was not to take a break before the sprint. It’s reassuring compared to the Critérium du Dauphiné. In the very steep climb, I managed to switch with the first three. Suddenly, afterwards, my eyes were so everywhere that I needed to breathe. So I couldn’t go when the two Yates left. But it bodes well. This Tour is off to a good start. The team worked really well all day. The job to do, she did. And in addition, Thibaut (Pinot) comes to take a fourth place which is a good thing.

For what ?

This allows us tomorrow (Editor’s note: this Sunday) to run directly placed in the general standings. So it’s a good day and a more than good start to the Tour. Now that’s just one step. There are still twenty left. Let’s stay focused.

What did you think of the Yates brothers’ double?

They don’t surprise me. There was a downtime at one point and they had the strength to get out of the group. Behind, there is not much to say. When I saw them leave, I said to myself: good to two brothers, they are not going to look at each other (smiles). Already individually, they are solid runners. So two… Congratulations to them.

What are you expecting from this Sunday’s stage?

The day will be complicated again. We might have another big fight. Especially if sprinters take it into their heads to pass the Jaizkibel.
