The day after a welcome first day of rest, after an ultra-tiring start to the Tour, the peloton hits the road again on Tuesday 11 July. The stage does not look very long, but nervous and hilly, under an expected stormy heat. Attention to those who have not recharged the batteries well this Monday. This 100% Auvergne stage can hurt your legs and break some enthusiasm with a series of small 2nd and 3rd category passes.

Vulcania-Issoire: 167.5 km.

Departure of the caravan at 11:20 a.m. – Fictitious departure at 1:05 p.m. – Expected arrival around 5:30 p.m.

Number: 63

After arriving at the top of the Puy de Dôme on Sunday, the peloton spends its day on Tuesday in the department of the same name. The Puy de Dôme, the department not the volcano, is registered 63. This is not very common, but no incursion into another department is planned. Advantage for the caravan in the evening: no need to search for the new hotel on GPS at the end of the stage. It’s the same as the previous two nights. After the rest day, the Tour offers a wide panorama of the Puys chain. It’s nice to admire, less to climb. 3100 m of elevation are on the program for the day: it’s not a transition stage, with 5 climbs on the menu and lots of small hills that can hurt.

Our favorites

We haven’t seen much of him since leaving Bilbao, except in the role of pilot fish in the sprints. This 10th stage is clearly reserved for a fighter, a courageous rider who is not afraid of bumps and a distant breakaway. Stack the profile of Mathieu van der Poel, who can get the stage as long as we give him the opportunity. Who else ? Why not a Frenchman? Valentin Madouas, the French champion, who will turn 27 tomorrow, has the profile to take advantage of such a course. Also shy from the start, Julian Alaphilippe, if he has digested his efforts of the first week, can also be in the right shot of the day.

The tracer’s eye, Thierry Gouvenou

“We come out of the rest day. In our mind, this stage was designed to highlight the fighters and the strong men. It is a terrain conducive to attacks, with nearly 3,000 meters of elevation. The main difficulty is the succession of small hills that won’t stop all day. It will be a rough and sometimes steep stage. You will have to be brave to go ahead. If a breakaway forms, you will then have to have the strength to extricate yourself from it. Or to count on a good burst of speed, because the last kilometers to Issoire are flat. For me, it should come down to a breakaway. »
