The firepower of crime eclipses the worn-out police force, caught in the clutches of a corrupt judicial system crying out for a total revolution. This system, once the guardian of justice, has succumbed, transforming its servants into mere employees of drug traffickers.
The maelstrom of violence blurs Ecuador’s tourist landscape, turning vast expanses into forbidden lands for families seeking a safe vacation. Traditional hospitality is bankrupt, while digital lodging platforms fatten their coffers by providing shelter to criminals and providing them with security, confidentiality, parties and women. Criminal tourism flourishes like a giant parasite, voraciously entering the formal economy.
The figures presented by MINTUR at the end of the year are mere shadows of reality. The persistent strategy of inflating, manipulating, lying and advertising a fictitious #newEcuador drags us back into the whirlwind of socialist propaganda. Current ministers slip away from the majorities that build and sustain the nation, signing compromises with radical and vocal minorities.
Insecurity not only remains immovable, but is expanding with exponential force in the face of a government that seems to give free rein to violence or, worse still, lacks the slightest idea of how to confront it.
