Tourists Risk Lives for Thrilling Photos as Plane Departures Lead to Dangerous Incidents on Skiathos Island

by time news

A reckless habit seems to continue, for years now, by some tourists on the island of Skiathos, despite the authorities’ calls, as they stand directly behind airplanes at the time of takeoff. They crowd at the takeoff runway to capture a photo of the aircraft with their mobile phones, ignoring the looming dangers they may face from the wind and pressure caused by the turbines.

Many tourists are swept away, propelled into the air, and fall to the ground, while others crouch down to avoid the worst. An extremely reckless activity that, despite the warnings from officials, seems to continue this year as well.

The photo shoot that ended in hospitalization

Two years ago, in 2022, a tragic accident occurred at the airport of the island when a female tourist was thrown into the air by the gases from the aircraft’s turbines. The woman was standing on a ledge next to the takeoff runway, trying to shoot a video at the time of takeoff. The 61-year-old was transported with the assistance of the ambulance service to the island’s health center and then by private boat to the port of Volos, where doctors diagnosed her with severe cranioencephalic injuries.
