BENI – The rehabilitation and asphalting of National Road No. 4 going from Beni in the province of North Kivu to Kisangani in the province of Tshopo is coming soon. The Congolese government has just signed a contract with a Chinese company which will be responsible for carrying out the work.

Last Sunday, China Construction Company signed the contract. The Congolese government was represented by the Minister of Infrastructure, Public Works and Reconstruction. According to the contract, 840 kilometers of road will be paved.

Mr. Vincent Tsongo is the director of this project. According to him, it is an integrating project not only at the national level but also at the sub-regional level, given that this route allows trade with Uganda and even the port of Mombasa in Kenya. At the China-Africa conference, which will take place this week, this project will be presented and taken as a priority. The China Construction Company has four years to carry out the planned work.

The announcement of the work delights the populations of the two provinces concerned and also that of Ituri crossed by this National Road No. 4. According to some managers of travel agencies who use this road infrastructure, once the project is realized, it will revive the economy of this part of eastern DRC. This economy has suffered greatly from insecurity and the lack of good roads.

The rehabilitated National Road will create an interconnection with the Congo River, which will allow exchanges between the capital Kinshasa and the eastern provinces by river.
