The collaboration between Toyota and BMW has brought many joys to car lovers. The last of them is the resurrection of the legendary sports car Supra after more than 13 years with a straight six-cylinder engine straight from Munich.
Now, according to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asia, the two manufacturers are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding about hydrogen transportation on September 5.
According to a BMW spokesman told Reuters, “BMW and Toyota have been working on fuel cell technologies for several years, with the common goal of offering another alternative in the world of zero emissions.”
Gasoline is a hydrogen system that generates electricity through electrolysis and is used to power a motor. These cars also have a battery to store the surplus, but it is smaller in size and weight than that of a conventional electric car.
Within its range, Toyota has the Mirai, an exclusive high-performance sedan powered by hydrogen. BMW, for its part, introduced an iX5 that uses this technology last year. Another manufacturer that offers a model with this system is Hyundai, with its Nexo, which was the best seller last year.
Hydrogen cars are a small part of car sales, with an estimated 60,000 of them on the road. For this reason, some manufacturers decided to complete their hydrogen lines, such as Mercedes-Benz, which produces a few units of its GLC or Honda, with its Clarity.
Although they have the advantage of having short refueling times, they have the disadvantage that the hydrogen station network is non-existent (only 750 service stations worldwide), in addition to the high costs per car.
However, it is still an interesting option to decarbonize transportation, especially transportation. Creating electric trucks was considered impractical, due to the size and weight of the batteries they would need to carry heavy loads. In addition, these require chargers of up to a megawatt of power so that the breaks are not too long.
