On the 11th, aftershocks continued over the leak of a list of 570,000 People Power Party members from the Future Korea Research Institute, a public opinion polling company known to be run by Myung Tae-gyun, a key figure in the suspicion of interference in first lady Kim Kun-hee’s nomination.
Mr. Myeong posted on his Facebook page on this day, “560,000 people on the party membership list? “Ask the Future Korea Research Institute and Mayor Hong Jun-pyo (Daegu),” he wrote, adding, “It keeps coming up again and again.” The leak of the party member list suggested a connection with Mayor Hong, who was participating in the People Power Party presidential election at the time. Mayor Hong dismissed this, saying, “I will show you what happens if you lie.” Mayor Hong said, “I can’t just leave Myung Tae-gyun talking nonsense,” and “I can’t stand by and watch him play around with candidate Yoon Seok-yeol during the last presidential primary and then lie about the party membership list as if I had leaked it to him.” Mayor Hong told the Dong-A Ilbo, “We plan to report Mr. Myeong for spreading false information.”
Rep. Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party and Rep. Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party had a public war of words over suspicions of Myeong’s involvement in the 2021 party leadership primary. Rep. Na claimed, “The 2021 Seoul mayoral primary with candidate Oh Se-hoon and the 2021 representative election convention with candidate Lee Jun-seok were a series of unexpected phenomena,” and “I only heard that Mr. Myeong intervened afterwards.” He raised suspicions that Mr. Myeong may have been behind his defeat in the primary. Rep. Na said, “(At the 2021 national convention), I was comfortably first in the national convention with candidate Lee Jun-seok, but a public opinion polling agency related to Mr. Myung conducted public opinion polls seven times,” and “This candidate was the first to beat me.” “The survey was sent out by the relevant public opinion polling agency, and several subsequent surveys and articles drove candidate Lee Jun-seok’s approval rating like a snowball,” he said.
Rep. Lee immediately refuted this, saying, “These are early signs of becoming a proponent of election fraud.” Rep. Lee said, “I want to claim election fraud, but I can’t point out specifically what the problem is, so I only list superficial details and cry.” Take just one ‘manipulated’ survey that deviates from the trend. “There is none,” he said.
As the public war of words continues between those involved in the ‘Myung Tae-gyun list’, the People Power Party is investigating who the party member list that the Central Party delivered to the camps of candidates Seok-yeol Yoon, Jun-pyo Hong, Seung-min Yoo, and Hee-ryong Won on a USB in October 2021 passed through and how it was moved. It has been reported that the plan is to look into possible violations of political funding laws. In a phone call, a key member of the People Power Party leadership said, “We will check the flow of each camp that received the USB containing the party member list from the Central Party, including who in the camp they delivered it to,” and “We will look into how Mr. Myeong obtained it.” did it
The People Power Party also plans to examine whether the two public opinion polls conducted by Myung in October 2021 based on the party member list may have violated the Political Fund Act. A key leadership official said, “If a specific presidential candidate’s camp requested an opinion poll from Mr. Myeong and received the results for free without paying any money, it would be a violation of the political fund law.”
