“We count a lot on the activism and inclusion of young people, above all to introduce them to the knowledge of our historical-artistic and cultural heritage. For us it was a work of great importance. This year we concentrated above all on that which is ‘The Mosaic of Wonders’, therefore on the tradition of Sicilian ceramics and we hope that this message, this incipit of urban regeneration, passes not only through Messina but through the entire Sicilian and national territory”. This was said by Eleonora Orfanò, vice-president of Aigu (Italian Youth Association for UNESCO), speaking at the inauguration of ‘The Mosaic of Wonders’, a collective work of art by nine Sicilian artists promoted by Birra Messina Cristalli di Sale, created thanks with the support of the MeS.S.In.A Foundation and in collaboration with the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO and with the patronage of the Municipality of Messina. Among the objectives of the collaboration between Aigu and Birra Messina Cristalli di Sale, in fact, there is also the communication of Sicilian art, beauty and wonder to young people.
The common thread that led to the selection of the nine artists was the Aigu’s search for ceramists who were younger than the traditional Sicilian masters of the sector. “Above all, we decided to introduce several women to make it clear that traditional professions are now open to all – underlines Orfanò -. In this new contemporaneity, the gender gap is becoming less and less evident and, therefore, for us it was very important to communicate to young people that those who want to undertake a career in the field of traditional professions can do so regardless of gender. Tradition must not be something stale that only concerns the past – he concluded -, but a springboard for our future and must always be reworked in contemporary key”.
