Performances in everyday spaces such as Dankook University Hospital, the Blue House, and Incheon International Airport

The Korea Traditional Performing Arts Foundation (Chairman Samjin Kim) will host the ‘2024 The Art Spot Series’ where traditional performing arts can be experienced in various spaces.

‘The Art Spot Series’ is a performance that shows the charm of traditional art by adding a new sense to traditional Korean music in various spaces. This year, it will visit audiences in various everyday spaces such as Dankook University Hospital, Cheong Wa Dae, and Incheon International Airport. The performance will start at Dankook University Hospital in August and continue to Cheong Wa Dae and Incheon International Airport in September.

The Dankook University Hospital performance will be held eight times from August 8 to October 18, and will provide a special time for those visiting the hospital in the lobby and outdoor music garden. The group ‘Space’, which reinterprets traditional music with various instruments regardless of genre, ‘Guim’, which expresses poetry with gentle resonance with our contemporary emotions, ‘Geomungo Byeongchang Club’, which will show a new side of Geomungo Byeongchang with a play music with a unique story, and ‘Yehwa’, which will provide a spectacular spectacle by showing live drawings on stage, will participate.

The performances to be held on September 7th and 8th at the Cheong Wa Dae heliport include a lively Nongak performance by the ‘Percussion Performance Project ‘Maekbak” and a pangut by ‘Creative Performance THE Num’, praying for peace and well-being. The tightrope walking of the ‘Performance Creation Group Saram’ that makes the audience dizzy and the band ‘Dongyang Gojupa’ that plays the yanggeum with mysterious charm will provide excitement and joy to visitors to Cheong Wa Dae. In particular, experience booths such as beona spinning and traditional knot keyring making will be set up to take advantage of the special outdoor space of the Cheong Wa Dae heliport, providing a variety of things to enjoy for those visiting Cheong Wa Dae on the weekend.

Incheon International Airport performances will be held at the Millennium Hall in Terminal 1, a space where the departure and arrival halls meet. On September 13, ‘Second Moon’, familiar to the public for their Irish music, will meet with the widely active singer Oh Dan-hae to present a young and sensible Taryeong, and the ‘Sejong Gugak Orchestra’ will present an interesting stage that is not often seen, such as a selection of songs that combine Eastern and Western instruments, as well as a performance of the ‘Theremin’, an electronic instrument that uses magnetic fields to produce sounds without touching them. On September 14, the ‘Yul-ak-hoe’ performance, where you can feel the essence of court court life, and ‘Murr’ performance, which communicates with the audience through jazz performances using traditional wind instruments, are expected to convey the charm of traditional art to passengers who visit the airport with excitement for the Chuseok holiday.

Kim Sam-jin, chairman of the Korea Traditional Performing Arts Foundation, said, “I hope that these performances, which visit citizens’ everyday spaces, will contribute to expanding the boundaries of traditional performing arts.” He added, “I hope that the time spent encountering traditional arts in everyday places such as hospitals and airports will become a special experience and memory.”

The traditional performance ‘The Art Spot Series’ utilizing cultural spaces is free for all admission, and detailed information about the performances can be found on the website of the Korea Traditional Performing Arts Promotion Foundation.
