The traffic light parties have cancelled their coalition committee meeting for next week without giving any official reasons. The reason for this is likely the disastrous result in the state elections.

The traffic light parties have apparently cancelled a coalition committee planned for next week. This is reported by “Welt am Sonntag” newspaper, citing participants in the committee. The most important representatives of the SPD, Greens and FDP actually wanted to meet on Wednesday, but that will not happen now. The report does not give any official reasons for this.

However, the mood in the traffic light coalition is currently at a low point. The three parties suffered significant losses in the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony.

The FDP and the Greens did not even make it into the state parliament in Thuringia, the SPD lost more than two percentage points and only received 6.1 percent of the vote. The parties also lost in Saxony – here the SPD and the Greens together received around 12 percent of the vote, about as much as the BSW alone. The FDP did not make it into the state parliament, with only one percent.

The federal cabinet’s closed meeting at Meseberg Castle, which was planned for early September, had already been cancelled, allegedly due to scheduling issues. The coalition partners currently have a lot to discuss – especially on the subject of migration. The parties actually wanted to agree on reforms by the middle of next week.

On Tuesday, the federal government, the CDU as the largest opposition force and the federal states discussed migration and internal security. CDU leader Merz said afterwards that the CDU and the federal states governed by the CDU and CSU only wanted to enter into further talks if migrants were turned back at the German borders. On Wednesday evening, he set a deadline of next Tuesday for a “binding statement” from the federal government.
