Two chambers of commerce are calling for immediate measures to organize traffic in Budapest.

The Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BKIK) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Pest County and Érd City (PMKIK) argued in a joint statement that the current situation is already hindering the capital’s economic growth.

The capital city local government’s traffic management practices over the past four years have led to constant traffic jams on the roads and increased travel times for public and private transport, making the transportation of goods impossible. An immediate paradigm shift is needed because, in the chambers’ opinion, the main task of transport organizers is not to reduce the capacity of roads and introduce driving bans (which increases air pollution), but rather to “satisfy transport demand in the fastest and most environmentally friendly way.” .

BKIK and PMKIK, which represent 400,000 companies, are therefore calling on the capital to suspend with immediate effect the “Mobility 2030” program, which focuses almost exclusively on eliminating car traffic, to remove the bicycle lanes painted in unjustified places and to restrict the passage of to allow purely electric vehicles on the chain bridge. The chambers believe that their “smart” proposals, regularly put forward by experts, would be an excellent way to optimize transport in Budapest. Examples of this include dynamic traffic management, parking information systems, time limits for goods deliveries, access vignettes, but also P+R parking spaces or the construction of a new Danube bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.
