A toddler less than two years old died this morning (Wednesday) from her injuries, after last night she was hit by a huge block of hail during a storm that occurred in the province of Catalonia in Spain. These are the largest hailstones observed in the area in 20 years, some with a diameter of over 10 cm.

The girl, who was only 20 months old, was hit by the hail in the town of La Bisval d’Amforde yesterday evening. She was rushed to the hospital immediately after the injury, even the doctors were unable to save her and she died of her injuries in the early hours of the morning. The mayor said on one of the regional radio stations: “There wasn’t much we could do for her, it’s a terrible event. The hailstones fell from the sky for only 10 minutes, but it was 10 minutes of terror.”

The Catalan Meteorological Service reported the presence of hailstones whose diameter was over 10 cm, near the town where the girl was injured. The unusually sized hailstones are the largest observed in the area since 2002. In addition, the fire and rescue services of the province reported that they received 39 Calls from the small town and two more calls from the adjacent town during the night – residents reported that the hail broke tiles on the roofs and snapped electrical cables.
