Tragedy in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah in the United States: a woman found her death on Wednesday this week during a hike in the park with her husband, after succumbing to the intense cold. Her husband tried to call for help, but by the time rescuers arrived it was too late.

The 31-year-old woman was hiking in the park with her 33-year-old husband on a 15-mile (25 km) top-to-bottom hiking trail through the park’s Narrows – the same spot where a 22-year-old tourist from Arizona was swept away by terrifying floodwaters in August.

According to the New York Post, the couple began their trip on Tuesday and spent the night camping in the park. The man said that the weather became very cold at night, and his wife began to show signs of hypothermia. On Wednesday morning, the couple stopped about a mile from the north end of the Riverside Walk, a paved path that leads from Sinawawa Temple to the Narrows area, and decided to split up.

The wife stayed behind while the husband, also injured from the cold, continued walking, eventually finding park rangers on the trail. Zion Park staff immediately took him to medical care. Other visitors performed CPR on the woman before Zion rescue teams arrived, but it was too late. The identity of the couple has not yet been revealed.

The woman’s death comes on the same day that rescuers in New Hampshire found the body of student Emily Sotelo, who apparently succumbed to the intense cold and winds that prevailed in that area.

US National Park Service officials are reminding hikers touring in cold weather conditions to wear extra layers and food, stay dry and stay physically active.
