The public remains in shock from the tragedy that occurred on Friday afternoon on the national road Pyrgos – Kyparissia, at the height of Elia in Messinia. Four people lost their lives, including a baby and a 12-year-old girl, while a 19-year-old is fighting for his life.

The 19-year-old is hospitalized at the Panarkadian Hospital in Tripoli in extremely critical condition. He was initially transferred intubated to Kalamata and then was transferred to the Panarkadian Hospital, as he is suffering from serious craniocephalic injuries.

As it became known, the accident occurred when a truck veered off its path, overturned, and struck three cars, which were moving in the opposite direction.

From the first car, a 12-year-old girl and a 44-year-old man from Kalyvia of Ilida were extracted dead. The 19-year-old, who was a front-seat passenger, was seriously injured. The deceased were his sister and father. A 66-year-old woman was also extracted with minor injuries.
According to reports, the family was returning from Kalamata, where they had gone for the 19-year-old’s swearing-in ceremony at the city’s barracks. The 44-year-old, who was found dead, also served in the army at a unit in Rhodes. The mother of the family and another child are coming from Rhodes to Ilia.

From the other car, which was found under the truck, the 38-year-old driver and father of the four-member family and their one-year-old little girl were extracted dead. The family’s 6-year-old son was seriously injured and was transferred to the Karamanlis Pediatric Hospital in Patras, along with the 38-year-old mother, who was a front-seat passenger in the vehicle and was more lightly injured.

According to rescuers, the image they encountered at the scene of the accident resembled a war zone. The three cars had turned into an unrecognizable mass of metal. For at least two and a half hours, firefighters and EMTs were trying to free the passengers from the cars.

According to initial reports, the driver of the truck heading towards Kyparissia lost control of the vehicle with the result that the right wheels went off the road. He tried to regain control by turning the wheel left, but the tractor passed into the opposite lane and struck the first vehicle. Subsequently, the truck “folded” in the middle and trapped the second vehicle.

In the accident another car was involved, whose driver miraculously managed to save himself. He drove his car off the road, but both he and his passengers came out of the vehicle alive.

The magnitude of the tragedy is also evidenced by the fact that the bodies were not easy to recognize. The injured were transported to hospitals in Kyparissia, Kalamata, and Patras.
