Tragic Accident: Missing Man Found Dead After Being Swallowed by Quicksand in Lake Giacopiane

by time news

The body of the man who went missing yesterday has been found, swallowed by quicksand in the Giacopiane lake, an artificial reservoir in the Municipality of Borzonasca, in the hinterland of Genoa’s Levante. The body of 38-year-old Gabriele Zolezzi was recovered by the firefighters after hours of searching.

The man, well-known in Val d’Aveto, lived in the hamlet of Amborzasco and was familiar with the Giacopiane reservoir, where at the site of the tragedy, the signage indicates a ‘ban on bathing and the danger of quicksand,’ but overconfidence betrayed him.

At the moment of exiting the water, the 38-year-old approached the prohibited area and in a few seconds disappeared, swallowed by the sludge. The initial rescue efforts by firefighters and carabinieri were in vain; it took several hours to locate and recover the body. The carabinieri from the Sestri Levante (Genoa) company, responsible for the area, are conducting investigations to clarify the exact dynamics of the incident and whether all safety regulations regarding the danger of quicksand were implemented by the managers of the artificial lake.
