Canadian Couple Fatally Attacked by Grizzly Bear While Camping

A Canadian couple, Jenny Gusse and Doug Inglis, both 62, were tragically killed by a grizzly bear during a camping trip in Banff National Park. The incident occurred on September 29, despite the couple’s extensive knowledge of backcountry hiking and their efforts to take precautions against predatory wildlife.

According to friends of the couple, Gusse and Inglis were experienced backcountry hikers who were well-versed in wilderness survival. Ron Teather, a longtime pal of the couple, stated that they were “extremely skilled” and “took every precaution they possibly could.” Teather speculated that the bear that attacked them was desperate and viewed them as food, rather than being interested in their food cache.

The couple had stored their food away from the campsite and had purchased animal-proof food storage, indicating their commitment to safety. They had also shared their full seven-day itinerary with Inglis’ Uncle Colin Inglis and remained in contact with him through a satellite communication device.

When rescuers arrived at the couple’s campsite, they discovered their mauled bodies, an empty can of bear spray, and their e-readers still open in their crushed tent. The rescuers encountered the bear responsible for the attack and had to shoot it, as it exhibited signs of aggression.

Doug Inglis was described as an “extremely successful scientist” and a “go-getter” who was passionate about the environment. He often biked to work and wore shorts even during colder months. Inglis’ friend, Matt Goettel, emphasized his intelligence and described him as someone who “ran” and was always with his partner Jenny.

The couple’s friends remembered them as devoted to one another and recalled many pleasant evenings spent together discussing work and future plans. Their tragic deaths have left a void among their loved ones, who will forever cherish the memories they shared.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters, even for experienced hikers. It highlights the importance of taking necessary precautions and staying vigilant while exploring the great outdoors.

As authorities continue to investigate the incident, the local community mourns the loss of this beloved couple and offers support to their families and friends in their time of grief.
