A bus from the Tumi de Oro company, carrying members of the Antología del Folklore Orchestra, went off the road, causing a vehicular accident at 4:30 a.m. on July 22 at kilometer 20 of Cochas Bajo. Colonel Jhonny Valderrama, Head of the Highway Protection Division, reported the incident. As a result, nine people lost their lives and twelve were injured, being transferred to the Félix Mayorca Soto Hospital in Tarma.

Omar Valdivia, a musician from the Antología del Folklore Orchestra and a survivor of the accident in Tarma, recounted that the bus, which was transporting twenty members of the group, went off the road due to a maneuver by the driver to avoid colliding with another vehicle.
“The co-pilot says that a car opened up a lot to the driver and, to avoid crashing into the car, he had to veer a little and was overcome by the abyss,” he explained to RPP.

Surrounded by traditional music and dance, the remains of Ricardo Trujillo, Rolando Huaccho, Antonio Cárdenas, and Williams Fabian, members of the Antología del Folklore, were laid in vigil at the Santa Clara International camping site. The authorities continue working on the identification of the victims and the investigation of the causes of the accident. The orchestra had performed at the El Sicainito venue in Oxapampa and was heading to Lima for a show at Samay Wasi.

The accident occurred when the bus belonging to the Tumi de Oro transportation company, which normally covers the Jauja-La Oroya route, was on the Tarma-La Oroya route, indicating a deviation from its usual path, according to the Highway Protection Division. The accident may have occurred due to the driver’s fatigue, who apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off and roll approximately 20 meters into a flat area on the right side of the road.

The bodies of the victims have not yet been identified, but it is known that, in addition to the members of the Antología del Folklore, other Tarma musicians were traveling on the bus who were headed to the capital. This tragic accident has caused significant impact among the group’s followers and the music community in general. The highway police continue to work on the recovery and identification of the bodies, which is complicated due to the difficult geography of the place.

The ambulances from SAMU quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured, who were transferred to the Félix Mayorca Soto Hospital in Tarma. The National Police also arrived at the scene and is coordinating with a prosecutor to carry out the removal of the corpses. It is not ruled out that the number of deceased may increase as the day progresses.
