Tragic Bus Accident in Medellín Claims Life of 2-Year-Old and Leaves 16 Injured

The serious accident that occurred on the afternoon of last Monday holiday in the Manrique Central neighborhood, northeast of Medellín, left one of its victims as Maximiliano Quevedo Rengifo, 2 years old, who was traveling with his mother on a feeder bus at the time of the incident and who died after getting trapped under one of the vehicles, in an event that left another dead and 16 people injured.

The events occurred at 5:50 PM at the intersection of 69th Street with 47th Avenue, after a special services bus went down the slope of 69th Street without brakes, taking with it the feeder bus, a taxi, and a motorcycle. The other victim is the driver of the vehicle that allegedly caused the accident, according to official reports.

The Secretary of Mobility of Medellín, Mateo González Benítez, stated that “the special transport bus apparently lost its brakes, went through 44th, 45th, and near 46th Street, during its route collided with a taxi, a motorcycle, and a feeder bus from the metro. The first thing is to express solidarity with the families of the deceased and the injured.”

Maximiliano’s mother was taken to the Bolivarian Clinic, where from the first moment of the care she began to ask about her little son, not knowing that he was one of the fatal victims of this traffic accident. They even stated that at the time of the accident she had been separated from the child without being able to find him in any healthcare center.

Regarding the vehicle that caused the accident, judicial investigators from the Secretary of Mobility of Medellín, who are working closely with the Attorney General’s Office, will conduct a detailed expert examination in the coming hours to thoroughly establish the causes of this accident, explained Secretary González Benítez.

With this accident there are 186 victims of traffic accidents on the roads of Medellín, according to records from the Secretary of Mobility of Medellín. In addition, it is the second incident in a week involving vehicles without brakes, following the one recorded last Tuesday on the North highway in Copacabana, where a truck loaded with rum hit a car and a motorcycle, resulting in two more deaths.
