The accident that occurred on the IP4, south/north direction, in Vila Real, on the morning of Wednesday, September 4, at 7:27 AM, resulted in the death of a 78-year-old woman and two serious injuries due to a collision between three light vehicles.
The cause of the collision involving the three vehicles was reportedly, according to the National Republican Guard (GNR), a wrong-way entry onto the road where the accident happened.
According to information released by the Commander of the Cruz Branca Firefighters of Vila Real, the accident resulted from a head-on collision that ultimately led to the death of one woman and two serious injuries, requiring the extrication of the victims.
Traffic is blocked on the section of the IP4 where this incident occurred; the road is closed in the Vila Real – Bragança direction, between the Hospital and Flores interchanges.
The accident occurred at kilometer 96, and about 20 responders and six vehicles from the Cruz Branca and Cruz Verde Firefighters, INEM, and GNR were present at the scene. The Traffic Accident Criminal Investigation Unit (NICAV) of the GNR was also called to investigate the causes of the accident.
Authorities suggest an alternative to this road closure, recommending a diversion to the center of Vila Real and then rejoining the road at a northern entry point near the hypermarket.
