The announcement regarding the drowning of the 8-year-old girl in the pool at the campsite in Kryopigi, Halkidiki, discusses how the accident occurred.
Today, the group leader, who was arrested yesterday, is expected to be brought before the public prosecutor. The woman is 19 years old and was responsible for the girls staying in the particular cabin. She was arrested based on Article 306 of the Penal Code, which pertains to the offense of exposure, relating to the neglect of a person under someone’s protection.
According to reports, any potential responsibilities regarding the lifeguard and the head of the campsite are also being investigated.

“Camping Educational S.A.” which operates the campsite in Kryopigi, Halkidiki, stated the following:
“Today, Tuesday, August 13, after lunch had finished and the campers were in their rooms for their afternoon rest, we discovered that one camper was missing. The campsite headquarters was immediately notified, and a team of staff began searching for her in the areas of the campsite.
The camper was found in the pool unresponsive. First aid was administered using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and an AED by the campsite medical staff and the ambulance service (EKAB) that was immediately called to the scene.
An ambulance transported the camper to the Health Center of Kassandra and subsequently to the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki, where her death was pronounced. We would like to express our heartfelt sorrow for the loss of our camper and will assist the authorities in every way possible to investigate the circumstances of the accident.”
According to a report from MEGA, there is also a version that the girl left her room during naptime and dove into the pool alone when the lifeguard was not present.
In statements to ERT, the grandfather of the 8-year-old girl said: “We received no information from the campsite. I asked if they had a lifeguard and they said they did. How did your child get away? No one answered.”
“The ambulance arrived quickly on the scene and tried with the means they had to save her. They then transported her to the Health Center, intubated her, and brought her to AHEPA, and from what I heard, it didn’t have a good outcome. I want to express my condolences to the parents,” said the mayor of Kassandra, Anastasia Chalkia.
How the accident happened at the campsite in Kryopigi, Halkidiki
According to reports, the incident occurred early on Tuesday afternoon, after lunch. The children exited the pool, which had a lifeguard, went for lunch, and when they returned to their tents for afternoon rest, a headcount was conducted. The absence of the girl was noticed when the responsible group leader began to check the children from the cabins.
At that point, an alarm was raised throughout the campsite, and a search operation began to locate the child. Shortly thereafter, she was found dead in the pool, with the circumstances surrounding the exact causes under investigation. According to the same reports, the Greek Police were notified at 15:30 by EKAB, which had already rushed to the campsite with two ambulances and accompanying doctors. Despite the heroic efforts of the doctors and EKAB crews, the child did not regain consciousness.
The eight-year-old girl was transferred intubated from the Health Center of Kassandra to AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki, where her death was officially confirmed at 19:00.
Further details regarding the exact cause of the girl’s death are expected from the autopsy that will be conducted at the Forensic Medical Service in Thessaloniki. The case has been taken over by the Kassandra Police Department.
