This past Sunday, October 1, the Barcelona IronMan was held in Calella, one of the most demanding physical tests in the world of sport: the Ironman 70.3 triathlon. Unfortunately, the day ended in tragedy after the death of one of the participants of the race during the bicycle section.
The organization of the test has explained in a statement the event, the result of a accident between two athletes: “During the cycling portion of the race, two athletes suffered an accident. One of the athletes suffered a major medical episode and received on-site medical attention before being transported to a nearby hospital where he continued to receive treatment. Despite efforts doctors, the athlete died a few hours later,” they say in the statement.

The entity regrets what happened and shares its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. “We share our deepest condolences with the athlete’s family and friends and will continue to offer them our support in these difficult times,” the letter adds.

The organization has also provided details about the health status of the other athlete affected in the incident, who was also rushed to the hospital, although in this case no serious injuries. The man has already been discharged: “We wish him a speedy recovery”.
“We thank the security personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide medical assistance to both athletes,” the organization concluded in the statement. For its part, Calella City Council, through its Facebook page, offered its condolences to the family of the deceased. “From the City Council we regret his death and want to show our condolences to the family,” they expressed in their statement.
